The purpose of each person’s blog is whatever that person chooses it to be. Sometimes that person may choose to essentially state a thought into the air, either for the purpose of seeing how it sounds, or to get feedback/opinions. There is nothing inherently wrong in this. As has been pointed out numerous times, it is difficult to convey tone in writing. Sure, you can choose to use smileys, which is a bit of a cop-out, but oh well.
I have a lot of self-censorship on my blog. Probably why I don’t write often at all. Would my life and my blog be less complicated if I didn’t feel the need to self-censor? I would have to say yes. That is my situation. If you don’t feel the need, don’t.
I doubt (I could be wrong, but this is only my opinion) that people really choose to go through the effort of writing something on a blog just to get the goat of one specific person. It’s just thoughts going out into the air, like so many radio waves into space.
No one has to respond. No one has to comment. Generally, if you do choose to comment, you are inviting a discussion about the differing opinion. I do not think the original blog entry is inviting debate, unless specifically stated as such, or with a history of doing so.
I think of it rather as the emails that get forwarded around. If I disagree with the email, I simply delete it and ignore it. There is no point in commenting, as it may well lead to hurt feelings on either party. (that doesn’t look quite right, but you get the idea)
Let’s all try to remember that this is simply a form of self-expression. Relax. Enjoy. Eat junk food.
